Know what to look for, and what you can do about it – when it comes to a vitamin B12 deficiency.
1) Tiredness, weakness, and general fatigue is a main indicator of a B12 deficiency. Being deficient in this vitamin may lead to a drop in red blood cells, a.k.a. pernicious anemia.
2) Experiencing a variety of stomach issues, from constipation, to stomach aches, to a loss of appetite, may be a warning sign of a B12 deficiency, especially for older adults.
3) A B12 deficiency can also create a red blood cell condition known as megaloblastic anemia, which causes red blood cells produced in bone marrow to become fragile. This can lead to pale or yellow skin and eyes.
4) Glossitis, also called geographic tongue, is a condition of tongue inflammation, and the U.S. National Library of Medicine National Institutes of Health found a strong link between B12 deficiency and oral changes, in general, including glossitis.
5) Experiencing frequent or persistent dizziness, while usually not life-threatening, can be a warning sign of a B12 deficiency. B12 is used by the body create myelin, a fatty substance which protects and insulates nerve cells. Therefore, a lack of B12 may lead to nerve damage, and this may result in feelings of dizziness.
6) Nerve damage from a lack of B12 can also lead to the feeling of pins and needles in the arms and legs. Peripheral neuropathy is a condition closely associated with both B12 deficiency and diabetes.
7) Various types of dementia are also associated with diabetes, as well as chronic vitamin B12 deficiency. A lack of B12 may create heightened levels of homocysteine, an amino acid which may damage brain tissue. That’s why memory loss is yet another main warning sign of a B12 deficiency.
